9 Indian Movies That Got Banned By The Censor Board

Filmmakers work hard for making movies. Day and night, writing, shooting, direction, editing, promotion, travel cost everything. It took lots of time and efforts to make 2 hours films but this is a nightmare for any filmmaker when censor board banned these films. All hard work gone for a toss, just because of one decision.

From Kamas*tra: A tale of love, Bandit Queen and Water to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Urf Professor and Paanch, the number of films banned by the “Indian censor board” is many. Censor board ban these movies because of their explicit content, moral policing, Vulgar language and the movie which hurts the sentiments of a community or a religion. Sometimes it is favorable but sometimes censors board banned these movies for a silly reasons.

We as Indian audience missed lots of movies just because of the decision of censor board. Here is a list of Bollywood and Hollywood movies that never made its way to Indian cinemas but are definitely worth a watch.

Bandit Queen (1994)
Bandit Queen, a story based on the life of Phoolan Devi. Directed by Shekhar Kapur is banned by the censor board because. Bandit Queen was offesnive, Vulgur and almost laughed at the cinematic conservatism of the Indian censor board.

Black Friday, the true story based on the Bombay Bomb Blasts by S Hussain Zaidi, Anurag Kashyap. Due to contrvesy movie was banned.

A well known filmmaker Deepa Mehta’s Fire was also banned by Censor board. ‘Fire’ which garnered a lot of critical acclaim worldwide but failed to impress Hindu groups. The controversy ended with the leading actors, Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das along with their director Deepa Mehta receiving death threats and Censor Board finally banning the movie in the


Kama Sutra – A Tale Of Love (1996)
Kama Sutra – A Tale Of Love too faced the wrath of Censor Board because of n*dity, S*xual scene. Movie was good which shows the love making and many things of Ancient India.

Parzania was based on the real life Gujarat riots 2002.Though film won National Award. But its considered in the area of political parties of Gujarat.


Sins (2005)
Sins is an erotic journey of a Kerala priest who falls for the charms of a woman and gets $exually involved with her. Censor board ban this movie because of too much n*de scenes and many factors.


Unfreedom (2015)
The most recent one to join this long list of banned movies in India, Unfreedom is a modern-day thriller which talks about a lesbian love story entangled within an Islamic terrorism-related angle


Urf Professor (2000)
Another movie to run into trouble with the Censor Board was Pankaj Advani’s Urf Professor starring Manoj Pahwa, Antara Mali and Sharman Joshi.

Water (2005)
Water is another Deepa Mehta movie which courted a lot of controversy because of its dark insights on the life of the Indian widow. Set in a certain Ashram of Varanasi, the script of the movie was written by none other than Anurag Kashyap and took up controversial issues like ostracism and misogyny which were alien to the Indian Censor Board back then.
